Why Gender Dynamics Matter in Smallholder Macadamia Farming

This brief explores how gender dynamics within smallholder farming households shape decision-making, access to resources, and the adoption of improved practices. Drawing on research from Mzimba and Thyolo, it highlights that while farming is often a joint effort, influence is not always equal, affecting productivity and market participation.

It provides practical insights for smallholder farmers, cooperatives, agribusinesses, extension services and development partners on how engaging both women and men at the household level can improve adoption, strengthen productivity, and drive more inclusive growth in Malawi’s macadamia and mango value chains.
